Animal Nations Sound Project
Animal Nations is an experimental, ongoing multimedia sound project created by Indigenous artist Glenn Griffiths (Griphonmedia). It is a living library of music, storytelling, and sonic exploration that braids together traditional Indigenous knowledge with modern and emerging technologies. Rooted primarily in Cree language, worldview, and symbolism, the project celebrates the deep, reciprocal relationship between Indigenous peoples, the Animal Nations, the land, and the Creator.
At its core, Animal Nations is a journey — an immersive listening experience that moves through legends, metaphors, and contemporary reflections. Each song acts as a story or teaching, drawing on animals as guides, messengers, protectors, and mirrors of human experience. Buffalo, eagle, wolf, bear, thunder beings, water creatures, and countless others appear not as decoration, but as carriers of meaning and memory.
Musically, the project spans a plethora of genres: ambient, electronic, rap, experimental, cinematic, rock-influenced, downtempo, and beyond. High-fidelity production sits alongside raw, expressive moments, creating a sound adventure that is both modern and timeless. Advanced tools — including AI-assisted composition, voice technologies, and digital production workflows — are used intentionally, not to replace culture, but to extend it into new spaces.
Language plays a central role. Cree words and phrases are woven throughout the songs in ways that support learning through repetition, rhythm, and emotional context. In this sense, Animal Nations also functions as an accessible Cree language teaching and listening tool, inviting both Indigenous and non-Indigenous listeners to engage with the language respectfully and meaningfully.
Importantly, Animal Nations is not a fixed album — it is a living, growing collection. New songs, variations, and chapters are added over time, allowing the library to evolve organically as the artist continues to explore new stories, sounds, and technologies. Each addition deepens the overall narrative, making the experience one that lingers long after listening.
Through the merging of old art forms and new technology, Animal Nations stands as a celebration of Cree culture, other North American Indigenous peoples, and the enduring presence of the Animal Nations in our lives. It is an invitation to listen, to learn, and to remember.
